Semaglutide, commercially known as Wegovy, is an anti-obesity medication, approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 27kg or greater. Semaglutide is a once weekly injectable or once daily oral prescription medication for the treatment of obesity. Semaglutide works by slowing the gastric emptying which makes you feel fuller, longer. It also reduces appetite and increases the release of insulin. Semaglutide is most effective when used in conjunction with dietary and behavioral changes and daily exercise. This medication is effective in weight loss and can safely be taken long term to help with weight loss maintenance.
Tirzepatide, commercially known as Zepbound, is an anti-obesity medication, approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in patients with a BMI of 27kg or greater. Tirzepatide is a once weekly injectable that works by decreasing your appetite and slowing the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine, which makes you feel fuller longer. Tirzepatide also decreases blood sugar levels by increasing insulin production and lowering the amount of sugar the liver makes. Tirzepatide is most effective when used in conjunction with dietary and behavioral changes and daily exercise. This medication is effective in weight loss and studies show it can help to lose up to 20% of total body weight.
Although Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are generally considered safe and effective for most individuals with obesity, there are some people who may not be able to use Semaglutide or Tirzepatide due to potential risks and contraindications. Individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not use Semaglutide or Tirzepatide. It is not recommended for patients with a history of pancreatitis or gastroparesis, as it may exacerbate these conditions. Women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should also not use Semaglutide or Tirzepatide.
Phentermine is an FDA approved medication used for weight loss. Phentermine works by effectively decreasing appetite and increasing metabolism which leads to a calorie deficit and weight loss.
Phentermine is a stimulant and may not be appropriate for everyone. Phentermine can raise heart rate and blood pressure, so both should be controlled before starting this medication. Patients with a history of heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, overactive thyroid or glaucoma are not candidates for this medication. Women who are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breast feeding should also avoid this medication. Common side effects of Phentermine are dry mouth, constipation, insomnia, jitteriness and palpitations.
